The Capacitors
Not wishing to experience a capacitor popping I decided to replace all of them. There is a difference in values between the MK1 and MK2 design. As mine is a Mk2 I was able to find a complete set of capacitors from classiquesounds.co.uk The capacitors supplied are of a high quality and specification. However included in the kit are 4x 22uF 450v PCB mount devices. The idea is to mount under the original cans within the chassis. As my original cans were not matched to the new chassis colour and were scratched I sourced some 32+32uF 450v cans from cricklewoodelectronics.com These were the same diameter as the originals but around 15mm shorter. They were also black in colour with gold lettering. I have seen lots of pictures of renovated Leaks where the cans are replace by ones blue in colour. They seem to stand out rather than blend in to the aesthetics of the unit.
Having given some more thought I decided to strip out the internals of the original cans, the bases of which were bulging!!!, and have them powder coated to the same colour as the chassis (RAL1035). Then I inserted 2x33uF 450v axial lead caps filling the space with dry sand and capping off with the glue gun. The leads left protruding for connection. Job done.
